File quality and what we do to it

socials.download does not intentionally transcode or recompress the media returned by the selected source endpoint, and does not add a watermark of its own. Two honest caveats: a platform may serve several different encodings of the same post, so “the original” isn’t always one fixed thing; and VSCO video arrives as an adaptive stream that we rebuild into a single MP4, so that file is assembled rather than copied byte-for-byte.

Built for creators, researchers, and personal archives

Most people here are backing up their own posts, keeping a reference collection, saving family content, or preserving a public artifact they need to cite later. Heavier-duty forensic tooling — hashing, timestamping, an audit-logged archive — is planned and does not exist today. If you need evidentiary rigour now, hash and timestamp the file yourself on receipt.

Privacy and media handling

Downloaded media is not retained in socials.download object storage on the live free tier. Requests may still generate short-lived rate-limit records and standard security logs, which can contain IP addresses and are kept for about 30 days. Aggregate analytics and, only after consent, advertising are described in the Privacy Policy. We don’t claim that downloading is invisible to the source platform — what a platform records on its own side is outside our control.
